Traditional Chinese Medicine Descriptions Of The Healing Properties of Celery!:

Celery Nutrition. In Traditional Chinese Medicine Celery is a food with many and formidable healing powers.

Thermically (meaning it has a heating or cooling or neutral effect on the body's temperature): It is cooling. It cools the body.

Taste: salty, sweet and bitter

Healing Properties:

1. Benefits the Stomach; improves digestion, cools stomach heat and can reduce appetite due to stomach heat

2. Tonifies or benefits the Spleen/Pancreas, tonifies or strengthens Spleen Qi (Qi=vital energy)

3. Soothes an irritated Liver, cools heat in the liver

4. Dries dampness in the body that often comes with Spleen Qi Deficiency or dietary choices.

5. Purifies the blood

6. Pacifies or reduces such "wind" conditions as vertigo and nervousness

7. Promotes sweating

8. Cools such excess heat conditions in the body as burning urine, blood in the urine, acne and canker sores

Acid/Alkaline Producing Effect On The Body:

Celery has a very alkalizing effect on the body which is good news if you eat many of the foods of the Standard American Diet...most of which are Acid and Acidifying and are often the main causes of degenerative diseases.

Modern Scientific Celery Nutrition Information:

Celery is very high in silicon and helps renew joints, bone, arteries and connective tissues.

Celery leaves have high vitamin A content, whilst the stems are an excellent source of vitamins B1, B2, B6, folic acid and C.

Celery also provides a rich supply of such minerals as potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, and sodium.

Celery nutrition also provides many essential amino acids (amino acids the body can't produce on its own).

Nutrients fluids in the fiber are released during juicing.

The natural organic sodium (salt) in celery is very safe for consumption. In fact this source of salt is essential for the body. Even individuals who are table-salt-sensitive and for whom consuming table salt elevates their blood pressure can safely eat the sodium in celery.

While many foods lose nutrients during cooking, most of the nutritional components in celery survive the cooking process pretty much intact.

Cancer: Celery is known to contain at least eight families of anti-cancer compounds. Among them are the acetylenics that have been shown to stop the growth of tumor cells. Phenolic acids which block the action of prostaglandins that encourage the growth of tumor cells. And coumarins which help prevent free radicals from damaging cells.

Cholesterol: The juice of this seemingly insignificant vegetable has been shown to effectively and significantly lower total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol.

Colon and stomach cancer: The natural chemical coumarins prevent the formation and development of colon and stomach cancers.

Constipation: The natural laxative effect of celery helps to relieve constipation. It also helps relax nerves that have been overworked by man-made laxatives.

Cooling: During dry and hot weather, drink a glass of celery juice two or three times a day, between meals. It quickly helps to lower and normalize body temperature.

Diuretic: The potassium and sodium in celery juice helps to regulate body fluid and stimulate urine production, making it an important help to rid the body of excess fluid.

Inflammation: brings amazing relief for inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, asthma and bronchitis which also happen to have an over acid component.

Insomnia: because of its calming effect on the nervous system celery helps promote sleep.

Kidney stones: it prevents the formation of kidney stones and helps disolve them if you have them.

High blood pressure: Lowers blood pressure including that during pregnancy. East and West use both roots and stalks for this purpose. A compound called phtalides assits in relaxing the muscles around arteries, dilates blood vessels and allows blood to flow normally. Nervous system: The organic alkaline minerals in celery juice have a calming effect on the nervous system helps to reduce anxiety and nervousness.

Rheumatism (achy joints): Celery reduces acid and benefits the joints because of its high silicone content.

Weight loss: Drink celery juice frequently throughout the day. This helps curb cravings for sweets and rich food. Raw celery can be eaten between or during meals to slow down and encourage more thorough chewing of food.

Juicing Considerations...Healing Effects of Juicing:

1. Celery is one of the few vegetables that combines well with fruit. Lettuce is another that combines well with fruit.

2. Celery combined with a little lemon juice is a remedy for the common cold when fever is greater than chills (known as Wind heat) which often will involve a sore throat

3. Celery combined with a little lemon juice is a remedy for headache caused by high blood pressure.

4. Celery combined with a little lemon juice is a remedy for heat conditions where your face may be redder than normal and feels hot. Often these heat signs go along with irritability and even your tongue may be more red, as opposed to a pink tongue which is more normal.

5. Celery alone or combined with a little lemon juice is a remedy for Diabetic Acidosis. Drink 2 to 4 cups of juice daily.

Selection Criteria, Cooking And Other Tips:

As a Celery nutrition concern always choose bright vibrantly green celery as this indicates a freshness, robustness and high chlorophyl content.

Celery should be fresh meaning it is firm and chrisp, not limp.

It is a good idea to store in the refrigerator. It is beneficial to store celery in a sealed container or wrap it in a damp cloth or paper towel and put it in a plastic bag.

Do not leave it at room temperature for too long since it tends to wilt quickly.

If your celery has wilted but too badly, sprinkle it with a little water, wrap it in a paper towel or damp cloth and put it in the refrigerator for a few hours. If it is not too far gone it will regain its crispness.

Cautions And Contraindications:

Only a couple of concerns arise from Celery nutrition...

If you begin having skin problems after eating celery, it might mean that you have some sensitivity to celery.

Some people with low blood pressure have observed and complained that celery makes their blood pressure even lower.

So beware if you have low blood pressure and celery lowers your blood pressure.

As you likely know you can have too low blood pressure which poses the threat of fainting or passing out and other negative consequences.
