Modern Scientific Avocado Nutritional Benefits:

Avocado nutrition is practically mind blowing!

Next to the olive, the avocado is the fruit with the highest monounsaturated fatty acids content at 20%...followed by smaller amounts of polyunsaturated and saturated fats.. This amounts to almost twenty times that of any other fruit. It is partly this that accounts for its ability to "nourish Yin and Blood."

80% of its caloric content is easily digested and health promoting mono-unsaturated oils. If you crave fats or oils and don't tolerate them well, you will likely be able to tolerate the fat in Avocado.

Those trying to lose weight often stay away from avocados specifically because of the fat content. Ironically, the monounsaturated fats and the incredible nutrition of the Avacado boosts your metabolism, and actually and can therefore reduce overeating.

The potassium content is three times that of the banana. It also has three times the calories of a banana.

It contains the essential minerals of iron and copper which are beneficial for the blood, as well as phosphorus and magnesium.

The low sodium content in avocados, but primarily its low sugar content and the absence of starch makes it an ideal fruit for diabetics and hypoglycemics.

It is also one of the richest source of fiber among all fruits and vegetables. Avocado is packed with vitamin A, several of the B-complex vitamins, especially B3 (folic acid), and powerful anti-oxidants like vitamins C and E, and minerals such as calcium, iron, potassium, etc.

Let's hear it for Avocado nutrition!

Depending on the variety, avocados can weigh anything from 8 ounces to 3 pounds!

The Flesh of the avocado is hard when harvested and takes about six to nine days to ripen and finally softens to a buttery texture.

Like banana, avocado flesh is filling and acts as a digestible slow-burning fuel, providing loads of energy due to its high fat content.

Because of its high carbohydrates and protein content, mashed avocado is not only beneficial for us adults, but is also very nourishing for babies who are beginning to eat solid foods.

To check if an avocado is ripe, press it firmly but gently. If you can feel it yielding to the pressure, it is ripe.

To cut it, slice it lengthwise. When the knife blade touches the big rock-hard seed, rotate the knife around it and separate the halves. Remove the seed with your knife and scoop out the flesh with a spoon.

Do not refrigerate an avocado before it is ripe. But once ripe, it can be kept in the refrigerator for up to a week unsliced.

Once cut an avocado open, do not keep for more than a day in the refrigerator.

Avocado flesh that is exposed to air can quickly turn color because of the high iron content. You can prevent this by sprinkling it with some lemon juice.
